In schools/colleges: We used to go to school 6 days a week(some had half days on Sat) , mostly for a duration of about 6-7 hrs including breaks. Each lecture used to stretch for about 40 to 50 mins, we sat in class ,some even slept, for those lullabyes that seemed to go on forever. BUT WE NEVER COMPLAINED.
In offices:- Now we go to office for 5 days a week, some for 6 days a week (u get an extra day off in that case) mostly for a duration of 9 hours including breaks. We are spending an avg of 2-3 hrs more in office, of what we used to spend in school, and with age and experience that seems quite normal. If a 12 yr old used to spend 6 hrs at his workplace, then for the same individual at 24 , spending 9-10 hrs at his present workplace, is quite normal. (If he/she has the same productivity level of course) YET WE ARE ALWAYS IN COMPLAINING MODE.
In schools/colleges:- There used to be weekly assessments, regular homeworks, halfyearly semesters, yearly projects, vivas, annual concerts, sports competitions and the list goes on. Still you managed pretty well.
In offices:- Deadlines. Meet it or mess it up. Which I guess is no wrong. The company hired you for the same, and not for just increasing it's workbench (remember the insane level of negotiations you made in the on campus interview...:-p)Working for an organization demands a bit of patriotism for the same, and a true patriot of any organization will not always meet the requirements, but will do so 18 out of 20 times with passion.
In schools/colleges:- Indian schools on an average has about 60-70 holidays (including vacations) , but then we also have something called extra classes which some schools offer in order to complete the syllabus, no worries.
But as one moves to college these numbers reduce to about 40 holidays (apx) (mass bunks not considered:-p)with no extra time for sports or cultural events, interested students managed both classes and activities on their own with 75 percent attendance a must.
In offices :- Taking my company as a reference, we have around 35 annual leaves, apart from sick leaves others need to be taken with prior permission, and if you have a wise manager that is not a problem, else you can keep on taking sick leaves:-p (jugaad).
In school/colleges:- you pay the fees.
In offices:- you get salary.
Bottom line of the story:-
We are all too critical about our company, without even knowing that we are also not doing much to serve. We are doing nothing different that what we used to do in our yester years. Always remember while you are at your desk criticizing your job, there are about 35prcnt of educated youth, probably with same degree that you posses, with no jobs.
YOUR JOB IS NOT YOUR DUTY, IT IS A RESPONSIBILITY!!
